From Lowe Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc.'s website

How do you explain the death of a loved one to a child?

The age and emotional development of a child will influence the way they experience grief. Up to 7 years of age, children see death mainly as a separation event. Children in the 7 to 12 age group have begun to understand death as a permanent event. While teenagers understand and perceive death in closely the same way as adults, they may express their grief differently.

How long am I going to feel this way?

Every person is different, and so is their grief. Each person will follow a different path toward healing. Although there is no right or wrong amount of time to complete the grieving process, many experts agree that it is not unusual to take at least a year to move through the grieving process.
