Options for the body
Green burial
Burial without embalming, often in a shroud or simple casket. The Green Burial Council certifies cemeteries and funeral homes.

What it is
Green burial, also called natural burial, has less impact on the environment. It is often done without a casket or burial container, the body is usually not embalmed, and it may be wrapped in biodegradable materials.
The Green Burial Council certifies cemeteries, funeral homes and products against its own standards. Its maps list certified providers, and we link to them rather than copy them.
Good to know
- Embalming is not required by law in most cases, according to the FTC.
- Cemeteries may require an outer burial container such as a vault. Ask the cemetery whether it offers natural burial and what it requires.
Find a certified provider
The Green Burial Council keeps its own maps of the providers it has certified. We link to them rather than copy them, so you always see its current list.
Common questions
- Where can I find a green burial cemetery?
- The Green Burial Council publishes maps of the cemeteries and funeral homes it has certified. Other cemeteries may also offer natural burial sections, so ask locally too.
- Do I need a vault for a green burial?
- It depends on the cemetery. Some require an outer burial container to keep the ground from settling. A natural burial ground usually does not.
