Legal; facilities are run by cemetery corporations under rules in effect since August 7, 2024.

What the law says

  • Chapter 817 of the Laws of 2022, amended by Chapter 34 of the Laws of 2023, allowed natural organic reduction facilities as cemetery corporations (New York Department of State, notice of adoption).
  • The Department of State's rules for these facilities, 19 NYCRR Part 204, took effect August 7, 2024 (New York Department of State, notice of adoption).

Effective date: August 7, 2024.
