Headstones and Grave Markers: Types, Costs, and How to Order

A headstone or grave marker serves as a permanent tribute to your loved one. This guide covers your options, from simple flat markers to elaborate custom monuments.

Types of Markers

Flat (Flush) Markers

  • Lie flat with the ground
  • Easiest to maintain (mowers pass over)
  • $500 – $1,500
  • Often required in newer sections of cemeteries

Upright Headstones

  • The traditional vertical monument
  • More visible and decorative
  • $1,000 – $5,000
  • Can include engravings, portraits, and symbols

Slant Markers

  • Angled face for easy reading
  • Between flat and upright in size
  • $800 – $2,500
  • Good compromise of visibility and cost

Companion Markers

  • Designed for two people (usually spouses)
  • Can be flat or upright
  • $1,500 – $6,000
  • Names and dates for both individuals

Mausoleum Plaques

  • Bronze or marble markers for crypt fronts
  • $500 – $3,000
  • Size limited by mausoleum specifications

Materials

Material Durability Cost Notes
Granite Excellent $1,000 – $5,000 Most popular choice, many colors
Bronze Excellent $800 – $3,000 Often used with granite base
Marble Good $1,000 – $4,000 Classic look, but weathers over time
Limestone Fair $500 – $2,000 Softer stone, erodes faster
Fieldstone Variable $200 – $1,000 Natural, rustic appearance

Engraving and Personalization

Modern headstones can include:

  • Names, dates, and epitaph — Standard text
  • Laser-etched portraits — Photo-realistic images
  • Religious symbols — Cross, Star of David, crescent, etc.
  • Custom artwork — Hobbies, military service, nature scenes
  • QR codes — Link to an online memorial page

The Ordering Process

  1. Check cemetery rules — Required material, size limits, and base specifications
  2. Choose a monument dealer — Compare at least 2–3 quotes
  3. Select material and design — Review samples and proofs
  4. Approve the proof — Verify all text, spelling, and dates carefully
  5. Production — Takes 6 to 12 weeks typically
  6. Installation — The dealer coordinates with the cemetery

Important: You are NOT required to buy the headstone through the cemetery. Independent dealers are often 30–50% cheaper.
