Hindu funeral customs
Most Hindus cremate their dead, and the rites (antyeshti) are meant to help the soul move on. Here is what to expect, for the family arranging the funeral and for guests.

Timing
The funeral should take place as soon as possible. In India this often means within hours; elsewhere, local rules can mean a longer wait.
Small children and saints are sometimes buried rather than cremated.
Preparing the body
Relatives wash the body, dress it in fresh cloth and decorate it with flowers. A few drops of Ganges water may be placed in the mouth.
The service
The body is carried to the cremation with chanting and mantras. Traditionally the eldest son lights the funeral pyre, and a priest or relative recites verses from scripture.
Usually about three days later the ashes are collected and placed in the Ganges or another sacred river. Some families abroad take the ashes to India.
Mourning
Mourning lasts about thirteen days after the funeral, though this varies. During this time the family does not attend religious functions and avoids some foods, such as sweets.
A shraddha ceremony, with offerings of rice balls (pinda), is held for the person. The most important one is on the first anniversary of the death.
For guests
If you are not sure what is expected, ask someone close to the family. Plain, dark clothes are a safe choice unless the family asks otherwise.
